In reply to your response to my earlier review about the closing of your out-of-hours service in Harrogate: you say Pet owners in need of emergency treatment will find the same excellent facilities and standards of care at Skeldale as they currently do at Oak Beck. Im sorry, but if my cat is in need of emergency treatment Im not going to drive one hour to Thirsk for that treatment and risk her life. I would rather pay more and have the peace of mind of knowing there is an out of hours service nearby. So I (like many others) will register with a practice that is run for the benefit of its patients, not its shareholders.
Since this once-excellent practice was taken over by Medivet it has lost its best vets and nurses, and replaced them by locums. Now it has closed its out-of-hours service in Harrogate, meaning a one-hour drive to Thirsk in an emergency - which is impossible for us. We will now be looking for a non-corporate veterinary practice that puts patients before profit.
Although the reception staff were polite and helpful, you can receive good service elsewhere for a fraction of the cost. I haven't lived in the area for very long but my dog needed veterinary attention so I thought I would try oakbeck medivet as I was familiar with the name. My consultation was not just a consultation and by the time I left treatment had been carried out without asking me and my bill had tripled. I understand treatment is required but not speaking to owners about it is wrong. I then received a call saying tests were required at again almost double what my old vet charged and surgery would be required. I waited while the vet tapped away calculating a price and to my absolute horror it came to FOUR times the amount my old vet quoted me for the exact same surgery. How do you even justify that? I find this very confusing considering there are so many other vets in the area and it would be cheaper to drive across the country to my old vet where I know I will receive good service. We are concerned pet owners but that doesn't mean you should take advantage of that.
Horrid vet that owns this practice, if they know you have insurance they will advise every test going, other vet practices are aware of their practice of money first, your pet second approach. The tests were not necessary and my new vets offered almost all the treatments at less than oak beck. Money grabbing in the industry where you're reliant on their integrity and entrusting your family member to them is just disgusting. The owner told me how he preferred to do the operation than use the medicine that permanently solves her condition, it was creepy. My new vet explained how horrendous the side effects of that surgery was. There's some thing wrong with him.
To be fair the rating doesnt go high enough for your practice, everyone is always so caring and helpful from the initial phone call to the end of your appointment, you have a 7 star service and should be so proud, many many thanks always, Andrew Dianne and Betty our pet dog
